Holiday season should be a time for charitable acts and social justice

On Thanksgiving night, families around America will gather around the dinner table. Inevitably, people will overeat, drink a bit too much, share some stories and, potentially, a few harsh words. But, hey, that's practically a holiday tradition. Every American speaks of the warm fuzzy feeling that overtakes them in the late fall and early winter months.

The first recorded Thanksgiving celebration took place Sept. 8, 1565 - 444 years ago. In celebration of the annual holiday, Webster University will close early in the afternoon on Wednesday, Nov. 24. In between mouthfuls of turkey and stuffing, diners announce the things they are thankful for, ranging anywhere from good grades to good genes.

The members of Westboro Baptist Church paid a visit to the St. Louis area for the second time in two weeks. On Nov. 12, the religious group, famous for protesting at the funerals of fallen soldiers, showed up at Northwest High School in Jefferson County.
