Campus of ONE battles poverty

Issue date: 9/18/08 Section: News
More than one billion people live on less than $1 a day. In order to combat the effects on extreme poverty, Webster University was proclaimed a Campus of ONE.
ONE Webster is a student organization devoted to ending extreme poverty, while putting WU on the map by winning the ONE Campus Challenge-a competition where more than 1,000 universities in the U.S. compete to earn points for participation in advocacy activities that will end poverty. Last year, WU was in the top 20 schools in the nation in the ONE Campus Challenge.
Nick Stevens, a junior public relations and international human rights major and president of ONE Webster, led the 23 person signing of the ONE Webster Proclamation on Sept. 16. The signing took place between the quad and the University Center.
"I did not join the movement to make extreme poverty history out of guilt," Stevens said. "I joined the movement to become part of history to become part of an adventure. Since I joined the ONE Campaign three years ago, my life has been
an adventure."
The proclamation outlines three goals: a commitment to global citizenship, a recognition of the devastating effects of extreme poverty and an expression of ONE's belief in the solutions to extreme poverty.
"Global citizenship is seeing humanity as ONE, but embracing our diversity," Stevens said. "But WU has already made that commitment. The students of WU represent more than 100 nationalities."
Suzanne Yatim, a senior international human rights major, said that the movement to make extreme poverty history comes through
raising awareness.
"Calling or e-mailing your congressman really does make a difference," Yatim said.
On Oct. 2, ONE Webster is planning a party for the vice presidential debate and it is likely that the ONE tour bus will be present. ONE is also working on a rock, paper, scissors tournament, a talent contest and possibly a chance to sponsor
First Fridays.
Meetings are every other Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Join ONE Webster's Facebook group or go to www.one.org/campus to know where to meet.
