Krista "Kritter" Keirnan introduces herself as the new president of ONE Webster, a WU group involved in the fight to end extreme poverty Sept. 8.

The battle to eradicate extreme poverty continues at Webster University with the first meeting of ONE Webster, a student chapter of the national ONE organization.

"I love ONE, and ONE is my passion," said Krista "Kritter" Keirnan, the new president of ONE Webster and a sophomore broadcast journalism major.

ONE Webster met in the Webster Village Apartments clubhouse Tuesday, Sept. 8 to introduce new members to the organization, review past achievements and plan future events. Nine members attended the first meeting.

Keirnan described how getting involved with ONE Webster in her freshman year has lead to a personal transformation.

"Some of my best friends came from this organization," Keirnan said. "The most that I have learned is from this organization and confidence in my abilities to use my voice and make an effect has all come from here."

The meeting started with an introductory video about the causes ONE is involved in. Cofounded by U2 frontman Bono, ONE is a nonpartisan group that works closely with African policy makers to combat extreme poverty and preventable disease.

"We are pumped up and ready to go," said Alvaro Coronel, ONE Webster's vice president.

Coronel discussed the ONE Campus Challenge, a competition that awards points for political activism and ranks the most active campuses.

Nick Stevens, last year's president and senior public relations major, is now serving as the group's online communications director. He spent the summer working as an intern at ONE national headquarters in Washington, D.C.

"I think this is going to be a really exciting year for us," Stevens said. "This is our third year. We were top 20 the first year, top 10 the second year and this is our year to make number one."
