The recent struggles continue for the Webster University men's basketball team in Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

After getting off to a hot start, the Gorloks (6-4) have lost three out of their last four conference contests, including a 73-71 overtime loss to MacMurray College on Saturday, Jan. 30.

The Gorloks led 26-24 at halftime, but a hot spurt by the Highlanders in the second half turned the tide and made it an exciting contest.

"We knew we were going to have to slug it out," MacMurray coach Todd Creal said. "We knew that a lot of their games so far this season, especially here at home, have been played pretty close."

At the beginning of the season, WU head coach Chris Bunch expressed concern about playing games so close after a one-point win over LaGrange College, followed by a two-point, buzzer-beater, win over Millikin University a couple days later.

"Sure you can get wins that way, but, if you continue to play all your games like that, eventually one is going to come up and bite you," Bunch said in a December interview.

That concern seems legitimate after this most recent loss.

Since those games, the Gorloks have suffered one last-second loss - Maryville 61-60 - and two overtime losses - Greenville 85-82 and MacMurray 73-71.

Junior forward Drew Moore added another game to his list of impressive performances against MacMurray with a 17-point effort. He also added four blocked shots and six steals. However, Moore still expressed some concern with the team's current play.

"We just need to stick to the basics," said Moore. "Take better shots and stop making stupid mistakes on defense. We need to get our chemistry going. We're just not flowing right now. But, once we get that figured out, it'll be better."

The Gorloks have six SLIAC contests remaining, including three games against top-five teams - Greenville, Westminster and Eureka - two of those games being on the road. Less than a month remains for the Gorloks to make a run before the SLIAC tournament.

"It's not about strategic things," Bunch said. "It just takes little things. It takes making free throws, making lay-ups and getting rebounds from the foul line. Those aren't things that you plan. They're just little plays that you have to make. And, quite frankly, we're not making them."

The Gorloks will travel to Eureka College on Saturday, Feb. 6, for a 3 p.m. contest. WU is currently tied with the Red Devils in third place in the SLIAC.
